Preserving Our Natural Resources Is A No-Brainer
GreenWorks Innovations Are Designed To Save Water, Gas & Energy
At Mohawk, we not only produce environmentally friendly products, we also take great pride in preserving our planet’s resources.
We constantly find ways to change and upgrade our facilities and processes to save resources like water and natural gas, and find alternative forms of energy.
Saving Water
• The amount of water used to manufacture Mohawk carpet was CUT IN HALF from 1995 to 2003.
• We installed our own treatment system at our Dublin, Georgia, facility instead of using city-owned waste treatment facilities like most companies. The result is water far above Environmental Protection Division (EPD) standards before it ever reaches the 1,300 acres of wetlands surrounding the area. Effluent discharge levels are well below the EPD’s threshold limits. The area is home to the federally protected gopher tortoise and the blue indigo snake.
• Our innovative approach to dealing with wastewater during our Sugar Valley, Georgia, expansion resulted in pure water that allows for flower growth and attracts birds and other wildlife to the surrounding wetlands.
• Amazingly, all Mohawk manufactured ceramic tile comes from plants that do not produce one drop of wastewater.

Natural Gas
Over the past two years, improvements to Mohawk Ceramic manufacturing process have resulted in savings of enough natural gas to fuel more than 6,000 homes for an entire year.
Energy
Mohawk’s initiative run the boilers of a one million square foot plant on renewable energy from bio-based fuel is just one way we look for alternative energy sources. We also evaluate alternatives to coal in order to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and acid rain precursors. Here are some others:
• We convert sawdust waste into energy.
• We use bio-mass as a fuel source at many of our domestic and international sites. For example, we use “Yellow Grease” (animal fat) as a 100 percent renewable green bio-fuel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and criteria pollutants.
• The making of Sorona® fiber, used in our carpets featuring SmartStrand® with DuPont™ Sorona® renewably sourced polymer, uses 40 percent less energy than its petroleum-based counterpart.
At Mohawk, we’re committed to environmental leadership that works!
